Mathematics: Zero to Negative, but Leave One Alone

Here's another mathematical formula puzzle. This one however, as far as I know, I made up.

The challenge: When x is 1, it stays one, but if it's zero, it becomes negative one.

if x = 1, y = 1
if x = 0, y = -1

y = x^2+x-1
or
y = 2x - 1
are two possible solutions
