Here's a whopper for you guys to chew on: Why do humans beings exist? What is/are our collective and individual purpose(s)?

My guess is that we don't have a purpose. We just exist by chance like any other organism. But that begs the question WHY are we so intellectually superior to all of the other species on out planet? What do YOU think?

A different kind of intelligence is more true than more intelligence. Ants form colonies, some species similar to humans use tools like chimpanzees, whales have a more complicated language than us, to name some examples.

I can't remember of find who said it but here is my favorite answer, "Life's purpose is to give life purpose."

purpose is relative. to viruses, bacteria, and parasites, our purpose is to provide sustainability and a habitat. to other humans or even animals, our purpose may be to provide companionship, food, shelter, etc. to plants, our purpose is to provide CO2. however, this may not really answer your "why we exist" question. we could just exist, or we could exist for only the reasons i already listed. additionally, we could exist for a reason that we aren't capable of understanding or just haven't discovered the reason yet.

I think humans come up with the idea of "purpose". Why do humans come up with this idea? We are probably the only things, living or non-living, on earth who think about a purpose. The rest of the world just lives without thinking about why they live.

That being said, maybe humans really do have a purpose, individual or collective.

I have many answers for this, none are necessarily right or I believe.

  1. Other life wonders too, they just don't show it
  2. Back in the day of chiefs, they gave orders and that's what they did. Now that there are none, we wonder.
  3. Because something told us we did...
  4. Because we're the only beings to realize that the world is not the only place. Wolves recognize the moon, but they don't recognize it as a place, but an object.

Among other ideas. Maybe humans don't have a purpose, but we are making one.

lots of good possibilities, EccentricPhilly. Which one do you agree with the most?

For me, probably number 4 of those choices.

It's true that other species might also wonder if they have a purpose or what it is. There's no way to know what they're thinking.

well, animals perform tasks to help their young, or to help their colony. so, they definitely have a purpose. but do they realize it?

It seems like animals realize their purposes to protect their offspring and/or contribute to their community (colony, pack, heard etc.) because they are generally extremely determined to do so. Take for example a mother animal's defensive reaction if you go anywhere near her baby. Sometimes it even seems like their purpose is more important to them than their life.

Agreed. I wonder if animals wonder about the future, or if they even have a concept that there is a future. Like when the owner is gone on vacation, does the pet wonder if and when the owner will return?

I often wonder about that too, Sue. Libby's stress level seems to increase the longer I'm gone. I wonder if the longer I'm away the more she worries that I won't come back?

It seems to me that primates and some mammals do have some concept of the future, just by their behavior. I'm sure it's not nearly as advanced as humans' understanding, but it seems to me it's there and maybe evolving to a more advanced level. What do you all think?

It seems to me like animals have an understanding of the future too, because of behaviors like squirrels storing nuts for the winter and bears fattening up in preparation for hibernation etc.

Good points, vicster. Those actions make it appear that they have some concept of the future or else it wouldn't make sense to do those things. Instead, they would just live in the moment.
