What is the purpose of emotions? Why do we have them? Do they have any evolutionary purpose?

My thoughts:

Anger can release adrenaline which can help physical attacks so anger has it's origins.
Happiness, indirectly, releases endorphins which can help fight of diseases, interestingly, including cancer.
Sadness, to make sure that when something is done wrong and you live to think about it, making sure it doesn't happen again (in the deeper senses).

And in my way of looking at it, those are three base emotions, everything else is just different amounts of these.

i think emotions are a defense mechanism, thus defining their evolutionary purpose.
