My answer is this: Some have souls, some don't. Where it is not impossible to say, but unknown.

Shouldn't we first ask, "What is a soul?"

I agree with AOkay. We have to define "soul."
Ima Pealover, you started the poll. Can you define "soul."

My definition of soul:

A spiritual essence that continues to exist after the material body (which it is connected to) is gone.\

What's your definition of soul? Arrow

I'm not sure how to define a soul. I can better define the mind.

PeaLover's definition is good!
Once question: Does this "spirit" that lives on have consciousness and/or self awareness.

Maybe the concept of a soul is a way for humans to explain parts of the brain which we cannot currently comprehend.

I find that hazzmata's statement, above, regarding the concept of a soul, is right on.

JollyJoanie, how do you define soul?

Assuming they move, maybe to another place into a newly born life, but not from the first cells that create, the just born.

EccentricPhilly, this sounds like you are saying souls are reincarnated.

Assuming souls exist, besides nowhere, it seems the likeliest place they are to go to is another place for them.

no one has spelled my name correctly yet. it's hazzmta.

so humans and animals have souls. what about bacteria, viruses, or plants? what about an individual cell, or even a robot?

humans and animals have very complex brains. their brains are much more complex than the "brains" that bacteria, viruses, and plants have. even cells have nuclei that act as control centers and make decisions. robots also have brains in the form of CPU's (central processing units).

with more complexity comes more diversity. with extremely complex brains, the amount of diversity grows exponentially. therefore, i think the term soul describes a individual brain which is diverse enough from other brains to be observably unique to a human. thus, humans and animals (especially animals with more complex brains) appear to definitely have souls, while organisms with much simpler brains appear less likely to have souls.

and, the late Pope John Paul II said that cloned humans would not have souls? Do you agree?

Define simple brain first. Isn't that an oxymoron?
